This should be no surprise to several people, and of no consequence to those who avoid McDonald's like the plague, or those who don't care, but I was amused.

There's a box in our breakroom that once held McDonald's biscuits. Curiousity caused me to glance at the ingredients. Not surprisingly, they contain all the stuff I'm not supposed to be eating: trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup. What did suprise me was this: "Natural (Animal Source) Flavorings"

Strictly speaking, McDonald's biscuits are not vegetarian.

My boss is currently squirming in disgust at this information, wondering what part of the animal they use to flavor them. I'm amused at her distress.

This was actually the subject of a class action lawsuit against McDonald's a couple of years ago. Many vegetarians became incensed when they discovered that McDonald's flavored their fries with "animal products"; the ingredients list only listed "natural flavors" but did not disclose the source of those flavors. Which is probably why the ingredients list you're looking at reads "Natural (Animal Source) Flavorings".

You can read the whole sordid tale here.
