I need a raise
Dec. 1st, 2004 05:49 pmYes, I know I just got one. But days like today make me pretty damned sure that it wasn't big enough.
I got into the office and was greeted by Moon, who tells me that her access to our healthplan's database is non-existent. I boot up my computer and sure enough, mine's dead too. Great. They've been threatening to cut us off for a while, despite our evidence that their proposed alternate route to get information (WebMD) is not effective for our purposes. I hope this isn't the case and call the help desk at the Healthplan. Whew. They don't know what's wrong either, but it's happened to everyone. They put in a ticket four hours previously but there was still no ETA for a solution. Okay. Moon can limp through using WebMD for now, and clean up the ones she can't do when the mainframe connection comes back.
I then leapt into a good solid hour of what I call "Openly Defying the IT Guy." See, there was a server change going on today, and in preparation for this, Trekkie boy came through the other day and switched everyone's printer settings so we wouldn't have a problem today. But, when he did this, he only set up one printer for each computer. We have two printers in our department: Tree Killer and Bush Killer. Tree Killer is the primary printer for most of us, but Bush Killer comes in really handy if for any reason Tree Killer is out of commision. When I saw Trekkie boy ignoring Bush Killer the other day while he was doing his "highly technical" switch, I asked "What, I don't get a back up printer anymore?" "Nope." he said arrogantly and walked away. I don't think he had made it 10 feet down the row before I set up Bush Killer again for myself.
This leads into this morning. The toner ran out on Tree Killer last night. Our order for new toner had not yet been filled. Guess what? Nobody else had access to Bush Killer either. Including the people who need to print pretty much constantly. So, I spent a good hour going around and making sure that the Senior Clerks, BossLady, The Supervisor of the other department that shares our cave, and The Harvard Kids could still print while we were waiting on toner.
While I was doing that, a brainstorm hit me and BossLady regarding my lack of phone, which they've been unable to install because of a wiring problem in my cube. Jessica called the tech guys to see if they had a longer phone cord around, but no luck, so once the printers were running, she tossed me a few bucks and sent me to Target to get a cord so we could hijack the phone line from the cube next to me (which is occupied by a temp who has no need for a phone.)
On my return from Target, I rewired the desks and now I have a working phone.
Next up, I ran my file transfers, and verified that the Mainframe connection was back up, but that the set up had been changed on the Healthplan's end. So, I walked Moon through the changes and showed her how to get it running again and the new way to access it.
Remember how I mentioned that Trekkie boy came through and switched over everyone's printer settings? Well, when the server switch went through around 10, it was determined that no... he missed a few. I was called, and I set up the people who now couldn't connect to a printer.
Finally, I was able to sit down and do some Data Entry. Oh, have I mentioned that I'm a Data Entry Clerk? Does this sound like the typical day for a "Data Entry Clerk?"
I need a raise.
