WebMD is on crack today. That always makes my work day so much more fun. Oh well, forget today, let's talk about the weekend.
Friday, was a nice dinner and conversation with
duncan_blkthrne.
Saturday was The Rocky Horror Show.
khanfused and I got there early and bought our tickets, at which point we realized that it was assigned seating and our whole group would not be able to sit together. Oops.
duncan_blkthrne showed up shortly after we did, so he got seats near us, but
serenica69 and friend ended up in back and
vivalabonita was late, but she had ordered her tickets in advance, so she still had a seat.
My seat was front row center. This allowed for much scandalizing of the woman next to me (and anyone else in view) as the show began,
vampirejew climbed up on my seat, and promptly ran his tongue from my chest alll the way up my face.
The show was neat to watch. I was surprised at how closely it compared to the film version. I was expecting it to vary more, but other than some dialogue, the replacement of "Once in a While", and the lack of a dinner scene, it ran about the same. (I had always thought that Sweet T came before Time Warp in the stage version.) It was a little odd trying to reconcile some of the characters who were such different physical types than the film actors. I was okay with Riff and Frank (different, but still easy enough to translate), but I wanted Columbia and Magenta to be switched. Magenta's characterization is this play is so drastically different from Patricia Quinn that it took a while to sink in.
I was surprisingly pleased with the production quality. My experience with Sacramento community and college musical theatre has been somewhat dissappointing. I went in expecting a lame set, lame costumes, and mediocre performers. Other than some technical difficulties (curtain with a mind of its own, some sound problems) the overall quality was very good. The Phantoms (Trannies for those who only speak RHPS) looked very cool. The set was great, the costumes were great. The performers (with one exception) were all pretty good. Some were better than others, but for the most part, they could all sing well enough that I didn't want to drag them off the stage and beat them to a bloody pulp. Janet was especially good. Very attractive young woman with a beautiful voice.
The Narrator lacked. The show has a guest "actor" playing this role every performance. This guy took way too many liberties with the script, adding lots of dick and pussy comments that were just unnecessary. I also noticed Riff covering his lines during "Sword of Damocles" and he dropped more than a few lines in other places.
During intermission, I glanced at the program and saw that the guest Narrator for the midnight show later would be Bill Voorhees, a excellent, formerly-local actor who is also a personal friend of
edgylesjr &
vivalabonita. So, we returned (along with Ed this time) for the second show, which was well worth it. The audience was more wild, like your typical film audience, which I wasn't actually so thrilled with. I preferred the quieter audience that didn't drown out the performances of the actors. Drowning out the film is one thing. Drowning out someone who's been working their ass off for the last month to learn a part only to have nobody be able to hear them. Not that I disapprove of the Audience Participation (I think the 8pm audience was a little too quiet.) but I think that it should be toned down a little from the free-for-all nature of the film participation. Just a personal gripe.
So, anyway, Bill. Bill came out there dressed as a Boy Scout and lisped his way through the entire role. He was hilarious, and even inspired a few character-specific audience lines by the end of the show. ("What further indigitieth were they to be thubjected to?" - "A thricpt with more ettheth!")
It was a long night, but a fun night. I crashed hard afterwards, and didn't drag myself out from under 15 lbs of cat until nearly 10 the next morning.
For those who have made it this far into the reading, Kevin and I will be going to the 8 pm show this upcoming Saturday. I know
erisian_fields and
bridgeweaver were interested in seeing it, but couldn't do it this last weekend. If anyone wants to meet up with us there, let me know. If we want to sit together, we all need to be there to buy tickets by 7 when the Box Office opens. I'll probably post again later this week to get a head count. And with that, my break is over and I must go back to fighting with the stupid program that doesn't work again.
