Civilization again
Sep. 7th, 2004 01:05 pmBack from the weekend and finally managed to catch up on everyone else's LJ. Seeing how everyone seems to have contracted the plague over the last few days, I'm grateful I went away to the woods.
The weekend was good. I spent Friday evening packing for the camping trip while waiting for Kevin to get here. I meant to spent the evening cleaning the house, but that just didn't happen, so unfortunately, Kevin was greeted with a disaster. (And no, darling, that is not the norm for our house. There is often clutter, but rarely to that degree.) He got in around 10, so we had a little quiet time before we both surrendered to sleep. A sleep, I might add, which was interrupted at 4:30 am by Nikita pacing back and forth on the pillows.
Morning came, we loaded up the car and joined
edgylesjr,
vivalabonita,
mahdi, and
elisandra at the campsite around 10:30. We set up camp, had lunch, and played a fun board game. Then Kevin disappeared into the woods for a bit while the others planned a trek back toward town for more supplies. When he returned, he was wearing his "I just found a bat!" grin and he and I went out looking for more. No more bats were found, but there were some really scary clusters of spiders (Elli took pictures, ask her if you really care to see them). We did a little more roaming around in the woods looking for critters, until everyone got back. The evening was dinner and conversation around the campsite, and Kevin and I falling asleep way ahead of the rest (thanks to Nikita).
Sunday, after breakfast, Kevin and I headed up the trail to the falls. I've made the climb before, but had forgotten what a bitch it was. 3 1/2 mile up, 4 1/2 miles back down. At the top, we cooled off in the icy cold water. Well, I got a little wet, but decided lounging on a shady rock was more than sufficient. Kevin proceeded to swim and play about like an otter for a while. We got back to camp around dusk, made dinner and told ghost stories around the campfire until everyone was ready to crash.
Monday we broke camp and headed home. We had originally planned to do a short ride on Monday, since Kevin is training for the Tour de Tahoe next weekend, but after we got a good feel of the Sacramento heat, he decided the hike was enough of a workout. (Considering even now, my legs are still bitching at me, I have to agree.) So, we went to Merlino's for a cold treat, stopped at Capitol Aquarium to price fish, and eventually curled up in front of Breakfast at Tiffany's, after which, it was time for goodbye.
All in all, it was a very nice weekend. I'm still sore from the hike, and my toe hurts from something I did to it while in the water. I don't know what, since my toe was numb from cold at the time, but it still hurts. I didn't even get sunburned!
